It is caused by gastric juice being pushed up from the stomach into the throat. It can occur for many different reasons but is very common and usually completely harmless. For example, to relieve or avoid heartburn, you can avoid certain foods and/or stress. When it comes to food, this includes reducing the amount of coffee and alcohol. Heartburn can occur throughout life, but keep in mind that young children may experience different symptoms than adults.
